The root chakra is responsible for survival and basic security. It connects the mind and body and connects you to the rest of the world. It is sometimes called the survival chakra. The root chakra begins to develop in the uterus and develops until about the age of one. If something traumatic happens during the developmental stage of the chakra, it will affect your chakra negatively, for example birth traumas will affect this chakra. The root chakra is located in the lower part of the spine and also affects the legs, arms, spine, rectum and circulatory system. You can think of your feet as roots that ground you to the earth.
You can find a chakra table in my previous post. It describes basic information of all 7 chakras: Chakrat – Finding My Own Power – Oman voimani löytäminen
Balance
When the root chakra is balanced, your body-mind connection is good. You really feel like you are living in your body and you want to take good care of it. You feel safe and connected with the world. You don’t get caught up in external things like money, looks, material or people. Your energy level stays good throughout the day and you are in a good mood. You will enjoy your life to the fullest.
Blocked
When your root chakra is blocked, energy cannot flow properly through it. You can be fearful, anxious, insecure. You don’t trust yourself, you might be aggresive and on the other hand pity yourself. You don’t have a good connection to your body, you don’t care to take care of yourself. You don’t feel right at home anywhere, you feel like an outsider.
Overactive
When your root chakra is overactive, it lets all the energy through without processing it. You can be greedy, cynical, aggressive. You may be lazy, slow-moving, heavy-bodied. You want power and are materialistic and you think these things will make you happy
Healing
There are a lot of different ways to heal your chakras. For me, best practises for Root chakra healing have been meditations, yoga, nature and all forms of exercise. It is also important to ensure that you get enough sleep. Chakras can also be healed with scents, sounds, food and colors.
My body-mind connection was in a really bad state. With the help of chakra meditations and yoga I recovered this connection and I'm finally at home in my body and it feels so good. In my experience a good way to boost yout yoga or other exercises is to listen to some chakra music during the exercise.
Meditations
I began my chakra healing journey with meditations. I had already tried all sorts of meditations and mindfullness in the past, but somehow I couldn’t get into them. After getting to know the chakras, I searched for chakra meditations online. I have listened to meditations in English, it is more natural to me, I guess because I usually listen to my audio books and podcasts in English also. But there are also Finnish meditations, links can be found here:
In Finnish
- Meditaatiohaaste #1: Maadoitusta juurichakralle – YouTube
- Ohjattu meditaatio – Juurichakra (1) – YouTube (might have ads, although I've never had them)
- Nopea meditaatio ja maadoittuminen veden avulla – YouTube (not about chakras, but of grounding, which is good for root chakra)
- Chakrameditaatio – YouTube (all 7 chakras)
In English
- Root Chakra Healing Guided Meditation | Healing Camp #1 – YouTube
- Before Sleep | Beginners Spoken Guided Meditation | Chakra Alignment |How to Chakra Balance – YouTube (all 7 chakras. this is the one I listen to a lot before I go to sleep, usually I fall asleep before the meditation ends)
It is definitely worth trying out different kinds of meditations, I think that in the end everyone will find the one that suits them best. Meditations can be searched on youtube, spotify, various podcast apps, I even have a Chakra Healing app on my own phone. It features 10 minute meditations on each of the seven chakras (in English). I used this a lot in the early stages of meditation.
All grounding meditations are also well suited for the root chakra. One thing to keep in mind when starting meditation is that the purpose of meditation is not to silence the mind, it is impossible. Thoughts will certainly fly in your head during meditation, but when you find your thoughts wandering, think gently to yourself that I will let go of those thoughts now and continue meditating. At first, it was difficult for me to keep my focus on meditation, but the more you do them, the easier it becomes. Of course, sometimes it’s easier to get into a meditative state, sometimes it feels like it just doesn’t work. But then you just have to accept the situation and try again.
Nature
For the root chakra, nature in itself is healing. Walking in the nature can also be a form of meditation. Leave the headphones at home, go out in nature and focus on listening to the sounds of nature. It is relaxing to walk in the woods and listen to the sound of your own footsteps, the hum of the wind in the trees, the songs of the birds. Or in the winter, the sound of snow under your shoes. Sometimes you can stop next to a tree and either just hug the tree or touch it with the palm of your hands. Take a deep breath and feel the texture of the bark under your hands. Focus on figuring out what scents you smell, you can even put your eyes closed and breathe deeply. Sometimes when I’m on a walk, I like to pick up stones and feel the different shapes of the stone, study its different colors, feel how it warms up in my hands.
Winter is especially wonderful when there is a clear sky and you can see the stars. I could stand in the dark staring at the stars for ages. I feel a special warmth in my heart every time I see Big Dipper. It’s the only constellation I recognize and brings my childhood to mind. Probably because, that’s when I learned to recognize it. The best moments are when it is so dark and bright that you can see the Milky Way or the Northern Lights. That makes me really happy.
Yoga
Yoga is the first type of exercise, which I have come to love. I have had the root chakra very blocked, I didn’t really have any connection to my own body at all. Yoga is really suitable to finding this connection. You have to focus on doing your own thing all the time, the movements are slow and when you close your eyes, you can make sure you focus only on the movement of your own body. I have been going to yoga courses, but also doing it independently. You can find a lot of yoga videos online and even online courses.
All sorts of yoga will help the well-being of your root chakra, but there are yoga videos especially for the root chakra on the Internet. Just go and try!
Finally
When your root chakra is balanced, you have good grounding to your life. You feel good in your own body and feel connected to other people and nature. There are a lot of different ways to balance your root chakra. Try out different ways and find the best one for you to heal your root.
