Life traps

I started learning about life traps in a book “Tunne lukkosi” (free translation: Know your life traps” by Kimmo Takanen. Life traps are unavoidable, we all have them. A life trap is a learned habit to react, experience, feel, think and behave. Because of them, we act unconsciously, often by customs we learned in childhood. The concept of life trap is based on schematic therapy developed by U.S. Psychotherapist Jeffrey Young.

Life traps interfere with our lives in many ways, they can make us pessimistic, cause fears, make us jealous or wanting just to please others. They can make us treat other people or ourselves badly. Realizing that I had these certain locks, helped me move forward in life. ”Tunne lukkosi” book describes the different life traps, what they can cause, and how to get rid of them. You can find the life trap test also in English here:

I recommend that you take the test when you have some quiet time for yourself. Some of the questions were not easy at least for me and I had to think deeply about things while taking the test. Even so, I wasn’t sure of all my answers. The test results could be sent to my e-mail at least a few years ago and I still have them. I had several life traps very strong and strong. In hindsight, it is not surprising that among the strongest life traps I had was Emotional Impairment and Emotional Deficiency, for I had been consciously and unconsciously suppressing my emotions for years.

Personally, I found it an effective way to do the test first and then read the book. Each time I switched to a new life trap chapter, I checked what result I had obtained from that life trap. I got to experience quite a few revelations reading this book. It is to be noted that this is not easy reading, it caused quite a bit of anxiety to myself, especially when at this point when all my feelings were still in perfect lock-down. If dealing with things feels very bad, you should read the book in small bites and, if possible, talk about them with someone. Personally, when I first read this, I was not in a situation where I could have talked to anyone about these, and I couldn’t even finish the book. Later, when I started therapy, we addressed these issues there. The therapist had a more extensive life trap test and with the help of the test and the therapist I was able to address my life traps more efficiently.

I must advice also that it is beneficial to study all different life traps, even if the test shows that you do not a certain trap. You might still have it but you are subconsciously compensating them and that is why it doesn’t show up in the test or shows up weak. But it actually is still affecting your life and you can benefit by working on it.

I believe that if you are willing and able to work on life traps, you will benefit from it greatly. For myself reading about life traps was very effective and it helped me starting my journey to myself. I’m now thinking about taking the life trap test again, it would be interesting to see how my results have changed during the years. And I might be more ready to handle my life traps and thus improve my life quality further.
